An experimental vaccine \u2014 ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 \u2014 produced by a group of British scientists is already being manufactured, even before it has been proven to work.\u00a0(Dado Ruvic\/Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A million doses of a potential\u00a0COVID-19 vaccine being developed by British scientists are\u00a0already being manufactured and will be available by September,\u00a0even before trials prove whether the shot is effective, the team\u00a0said on Friday.<\/p>\n

The Oxford University team’s experimental product, called\u00a0“ChAdOx1 nCoV-19,” is a type known as a recombinant viral vector\u00a0vaccine, and is one of at least 70 potential COVID-19 candidate\u00a0shots under development by biotech and research teams around the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n

At least five of those are in preliminary testing in people.<\/p>\n

The Oxford scientists said Friday they were recruiting\u00a0volunteers for early stage \u2014 Phase 1 \u2014\u00a0human trials of their\u00a0shot, and large-scale production capacity was being put in place\u00a0“at risk.” This means the shots will be produced in large\u00a0numbers at risk of being useless if trials show they do not\u00a0work.<\/p>\n

“We have started at risk manufacturing of this vaccine not\u00a0just on a smallish scale … but with a network of manufacturers\u00a0in as many as seven different places around the world,” Adrian\u00a0Hill, a professor and director of the Jenner Institute at Oxford\u00a0University, told reporters in an online briefing.<\/p>\n

“The aim is to have at least a million doses by around about\u00a0September, when we also hope to have efficacy [trial]\u00a0results.”<\/p>\n

He said three of the manufacturing partners were in Britain,\u00a0two in Europe, one in India and one in China.<\/p>\n

The scientists said initial manufacturing costs would be in the\u00a0“tens of millions” of pounds and acknowledged the investment\u00a0risk of pressing ahead with production before verification.<\/p>\n

They did not give details of their financing.<\/p>\n

Vaccine trials to begin within weeks<\/h2>\n

By 11:00 a.m. ET Friday, more than 2.18\u00a0million people had\u00a0been reported to be\u00a0infected by the novel coronavirus globally, according to a\u00a0Johns Hopkins tally<\/a>. There have been nearly 150,000 deaths.<\/p>\n

Hill’s team said it\u00a0plans to start safety and then\u00a0mid-stage efficacy trials of the potential COVID-19 vaccine in\u00a0adults aged between 18 and 55 within weeks.<\/p>\n

They then plan to expand the trial group to older ages\u00a0later, and hope to run a final phase trial with around 5,000\u00a0volunteers in the late summer.<\/p>\n
